Maude Ann Parish (daughter of Mary Elizabeth (Nay) Parish and John Parish) and her husband, Harry A. Wynkoop were born in Lebanon, Indiana. In 1902 they and their children Clark Monroe, John Henry, George, James Buell, Rush Ivan, Nellie Mae, and Mable Claire moved to Indian Territoy, Oklahoma and settled on a farm west of Chickasha, Oklahoma. They purchased the farm from a man who obtained it in the Oklahoma Land Run. Their children, Dorothy Leone, Ethel Nay, Donald Edgar, and Mary Margaret, who was stillborn, were born after they moved to Oklahoma. The farmhouse burned, and the family moved to 1101 Colorado Avenue, Chickasha, Oklahoma in 1918. 1101 Colorado was a two story, white house on a corner lot with Sycamore trees lining both sides of the sidewalk. A large picture of Mary Elizabeth (Nay) Parish framed in a gold, oval frame hung in the bedroom to the left of the entry hall. 1101 Colorado was the site of many large family gatherings especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Maude Ann, Pippie, as everyone called her was happiest when her children and grandchildren were around. There was always a grand feast spread on the large, round oak table and the long buffet. Music filled the rooms from the piano that stood in the corner of the living room, and love was abundant during those big gatherings. The Christmas tree stood in front of the large picture window spreading Christmas cheer to anyone walking down the tree lined sidewalk. No one enjoyed the holidays more than Pippie, and she worked endlessly for weeks preparing for them. During the Depression several of Pippie's children, their spouses and children moved into the house at 1101 Colorado. They found whatever worked they could, lived together, and shared their income in order to survive that terrible time called "The Great Depression." Pippie had a great desire to travel. She wanted to travel to many places she never to to visit, but she get to travel as many of her children moved to different states, and she rode the train to visit them. Pip was a wonderful woman that never complained about any hardship she encountered. She was kind and thoughtful to everyone. I never heard her speak an unkind word about anyone. she made all of us feel loved and cherished. My Father died April 5, 1939, so Pippie had to take care of me while my Mother, Dorothy Leone (Wynkoop) Orahood worked. Those were such wonderful years. I had to move away from Pippie when I was 7 years old as my Mother re-married. My fondest memories of childhood are the one-week vacations spent with Pippie during the Summer and those wonderful, exciting, loving holidays spent with the woman we all called "Pippie." I started calling her that when I was a small child. No one ever knew why, and I certainly don't remember--but the name stuck and everyone started calling her by it. There are many descendants of Maude Ann (Parish) Wynkoop. At her death in 1954 she had 22 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Of her 11 children the following had issue: Clark Monroe (Gatha and Irene), Donald Edgar (John Donald), Rush Ivan (Ivan, Eddie, Stanley, A. J., Paul, Dorothy, Mary, Joyce, Leatha, Lois, Virgie, and Leona), Mable (Ronald and Carol Sprowls), Nellie Mae (Vernon and Nellie Jo Marsh), Dorothy Leone (Harry and Sharon Orahood), and Ethel Nay (Alfred Jelks.) 1101 Colorado burned several years ago so the two story, white house that was filled with so much love, music, and laughter is gone. Gone also is the wonderful woman that resided there. They are no longer visible, but they will never really be gone as long as they are remembered by the ones that follow. I remember, and I tell my children and grandchildren about them.
